Breaking Habits pt. 2: Letting Go of Meat

One of my plans for January is to have a meatless month. This is something I have talked about for such a long time that it was finally time to do something about it. It is not as much of a problem for me (I don't like meat that much) as it is for the people around me (who like meat very much). The "challenge" is also made easier by the fact that it is only meat that is banned. I still very much welcome fish and dairy on my kitchen table.

Here are some of the delicious cooking that has found its way to that very same kitchen table this month. My boyfriend usually acts the cook.

My Thoughts On My Body And Other Issues

This is the final post I am writing for the August Writing Prompts. Instead of picking a particular prompt, I decided to mix and match them, in order to analyse my own thoughts on body issues and self-confidence. You may find a list of the prompts here

My first memory of being aware of my body took place in a bath tub a couple of decades plus some years ago. That was the time I told my mother that I was fat because my thighs were big.
She said I wasn't fat, besides being fat doesn't have anything to do with one's thighs, only the tummy.
I do not know where the idea and consciousness of being fat came from. My surroundings were not too obsessed with thinness. Not that I recall, at least.

I was more than a head taller than the other girls in my class. I have not grown a single centimeter since I was 11 years old and still, my ID card says that I am of average height.

My period started before I knew what it was.

I had no idea what happened to me and already then I was hiding within my shell, not wanting people to know about my thoughts and secrets. Writing about this topic is difficult because it is something I have never really wanted to talk about. All these years, I have somehow detached my body from my mind. The body is not really me. This detachment between mind and body was probably based on some type of survival instinct. Instead of having a body that the world would accept, I decided to develop my mind. A good idea, in theory. The problem with striving for perfection - whether it is physical or intellectual - is that one will never be quite good enough.

I know now that I am neither fat nor ugly. But for a long time I felt invisible. I still do, sometimes. Growing up with that feeling has made it difficult to socialize with people. I never felt the need to be called beautiful, and I do think that this is an unnecessary compliment. It is much nicer to be called intelligent. If I ever have a little girl, I would want her to appreciate such traits as kindness, intelligence, generosity and humbleness. Beauty is but a fleeing notion.

Sometimes I feel that I would like to be more daring about my appearance - to play with make-up, dress up and have more fun with fashion. One of my promises for self-pampering last week was to wear make-up, I actually did and it felt good. Who would not want to look like this:

In general, I'd rate my confidence as good. Or rather, I don't care too much of what others think. At the end of the day, we are responsible for our own happiness. Bad hair days don't exist if you don't let them. Having a decent level of self confidence does not mean that one is always happy and that everything is perfect, is more about accepting the imperfect self. Accepting the imperfections is also easier if appearance is not so important to begin with. Some people I know struggle a lot with their self confidence, and sometimes I just want to tell them that it is so much easier if one forgets about the rest of the world and focuses on oneself. At the same it is difficult to give anyone advice on matters like this one, because essentially self confidence comes from within.

Last but not least, I have one confession to make, I may feel OK with the way I look, but looking better than OK is scary. By being wrapped in my own invisibility, I don't need to feel people looking at me, I can go on with my own business in my own little bubble. So, if there is something I would like to "achieve" confidence-wise, it'd actually be the stretching of my own limits, to see how stunning I could actually be. Not because I'd have to, but because it'd be fun. Confidence, then, is more than just accepting and being happy about oneself, it is also about letting the world in.

Hello Polish [Language Challenge]

Long time no see. But my language studies have continued and next time it is time to begin with Polish [an evaluation of my progress in Slovak will come later next week].

I did learn from past mistakes and decided to take a small test of Polish, in order to have some idea of where the journey would begin. As a reference point, I decided to use the Polish proficiency test at www.transparent.com at http://www.transparent.com/learn-polish/proficiency-test.html

So, no perfection but the score is OK.

I believe that I need to work on:

  • Some grammar
  • ...but mostly vocabulary.
Vocabulary is the key for communication! As with Slovak, focus will be placed on creating text and translation. Here the advantage is that my Polish is a lot better than my Slovak so I will be able to create more freely!

Oops. [Language Challenge]

This week, while working on my language project/challenge, I realized that I had completely forgotten one of the essential rules of goal setting - having a tangible goal.

How can I really see any improvement if I don't know where I stand and have no idea where I am heading?

In order to solve the issue I decided to jolt down all the words that I could think of in Slovak in order to define my current level. The solution is far from ideal because it wasn't thought through. I also don't believe that the amount of words can be used to measure one's level in language. It doesn't work that way - in the ideal life, quality should come over quantity.

Apart from this mishap, I am quite happy about the challenge so far. I have done some writing, I have learnt some new vocab. All in all, it's fun AND it's a way to kill time on the train.

Básnik sa modlí za deti

In my Slovak book (Slovak for You) there is a wonderful poem written by Milan Rúfus and I thought I would share it with you.

I have translated the poem into English and Swedish. Both translations are below. At the end of this post, you will find a youtube video of another text by Milan Rufús. Listen to it, and you will hear what a wonderful language Slovak is.

Básnik sa modlí za deti

Nevedia prečo,
no vel'mi im to treba.
A možno ešte viacej ako chleba.
Aby im v duši pusto nebolo.

Aby ich mali radi okolo.

Aby im bolo mäkko
ako v mame.
Ked' bolia veci, ktoré nepoznáme,
tu každé diet'a,
plaché ako laň,
na hlave musí cítit' teplú dlaň.

Bože,
o takú dlaň Ťa l'udské mlád'a prosí.
V čase, ked' ešte ani nevie, Kto si.

šiel Ťa hore ten džavot tenkých hláskov?

šiel. Dal si im liek.
A nazval si ho láskou.

The Poet Prays for the Children

Not knowing why,
but it was to them very necessary.
Perhaps even more so than bread.
So that their souls would not be empty.
So that they would be loved.

So that they would feel as soft
as in their mother.
When the unknown hurts,
here each child,
shy as a dove,
must feel a warm hand on her head.

God,
the human youth is begging You for such a hand.
In a time, when it does not yet know, Who you are.

Did the chatter of thin voices find You up above?

It did. You gave them a remedy.
And called it love.

Gud,
en sådan hand ber människobarnen dig om.
I en tid då de ännu inte vet Vem du är.

Hittade pladdret av tunna röster Dig däruppe?

Det hittade dig. Du gav dem ett botemedel.
Och kallade det kärlek.

Some More Challenges

What motivates you?

In order to get my fitness regime going (again), I decided to embark upon a couple of fitness challenges circulating the Internet.

The 30-day ab challenge (see Facebook) targets the abs. The FB-challenge officially starts tomorrow, but my boyfriend and I started this challenge a couple of days ago. This far so good, even though I really don't like training my abs. Instead of going by the book, I try to beat my record every day.

I decided to add some legs and shoulders to the above regime, so May Madness, here we come (albeit a bit late).

On the third day I'm now feeling nicely sore all over. While the workouts don't require much time, I definitely feel that I have been doing something. An additional reason for satisfaction is the fact that I can stay in the plank position for a longer period of time each day. As I'm not doing the plan alone, I have someone checking my posture. This is something I recommend when doing all of these exercises because it is difficult to know if one is doing the exercises correctly.

Moja ranná káva (SK: my morning coffee)

Ahojte!

Ako sa máte? Tu je všetko dobré.

I'm currently visiting my parents, or to be more precise - their dog. My parents are off travelling this weekend and I am having a loooong weekend from work. In a while I'll also need to defend my thesis. Then, what?

I'm quite happy about having been able to work on my Slovak this week. SJ (the main train operator in Sweden) had quite a chaotic week, which gave me loads of time to study Slovak.

The material that I use for my Slovak adventure is a book called Slovak for You by Ada Bohmerova. It's not the most interesting textbook I have seen, but it serves its purpose. I'm also carrying around on the Little Prince (Malý princ), attempting to read it once in a while.

My problem when it comes to Slovak is that I understand it. Is that a problem? It sure is! Because I understand quite a bit, I don't make much of an effort to actually memorize the Slovak version of words and grammar. The other day I was trying to put together some sentences, which was very hard as I intuitively wanted to use the Polish alphabet instead of the Slovak one. Silly me!

I believe that one can learn a lot by analyzing words and sentences. So, let's analyze the "Ako sa máte?"

Ako sa máte? How are you?

Ako = how (compare with jak in Polish and как in Russian)
sa - this is actually a reflexive formant, which belongs to the verb mat' (to have).
máte = they have.

Conjugation of mat' and nemát'

Ja mám - ja nemám
Ty máš - ty nemáš
On, ona, ono má - on, ona, ono nemá

My máme - my nemáme
Vy máte - vy nemáte
Oni, ony majú - oni, ony nemajú

And how to reply...

  • Ďakujem, dost' dobre/celkom dobre. Quite well, thank you.
  • Bohužiaľ, nie vel'mi dobre. Unfortunately, not too well.
  • Dobre/ nie dobre. Well/ not well.

The Multiple Language Experiment - Summer 2014

A while back I wrote about picking up some of my old languages.  I have given this some thought and have decided to do a little language project as I finally have the time to do so. I spend a total of 80 minutes on a train each working day, so why not spend the time efficiently.

3 languages. 5 days a week. 5 weeks for each language. 15 weeks.

The languages are Slovak, Polish and Russian. And this is how I'm going to do it:

  • Day 1: Read from a book or other text
  • Day 2: Read an article on current affairs
  • Day 3: Translate the article into English
  • Day 4: Translate a poem into English
  • Day 5: Write a short story
I will be starting with Slovak because it is the weakest of the three languages. The goal is to be able to produce something in the language, a written text.  We will see how it goes.

Cool Things Right Now

I just published a post about February Beginnings. I also wanted to write about February Resolutions. What are my expectations for this month?

First, I want to be healthy so that I can be more active. I also want to do a bit of yoga, as well as some creative work (painting, writing, translation). Speaking of being active and productive, I also want to cook some delicious meals.

P2010045

Cool thing# 1: my new bag from Primark. Love owls Smile

Second, I want to have some time for spirituality. I’m normally a very unspiritual person in the sense that I can openly admit that I have no need for spiritual reflections and I’m far from religious. More than anything, spirituality is a way of staying connected to the world and a set of moral and ethical guidelines.

P2010046

Cool thing #2: speaking of moral and ethical guidelines, let’s have some vodka. JUST KIDDING! I like the slogan of this ad; Ideme žiť! Let’s go and live, shall we?

Third, I want to go on a trip. We have, in fact, planned to go to Olomouc in the Czech Republic. That is something I’m really looking forward to.
Fourth, I want to do some de-cluttering. Get rid of all the stuff I don’t need.

Book Challenge: Day 24 (pt. 2)

I said I'd think about it. It took me almost 3 months but I finally do have an answer to the following:

Day 24 – A book that you wish more people would’ve read

A good book is one that teaches the reader something important, while taking the teacher on a journey to another time and another place. Furthermore, the good book gives rise to thoughts and questions.
I read one of these books the other day. It's touching and beautiful and it makes you angry at the world for all the injustice and stupidity. And it makes you think about moral issues and life in general. Unfortunately it seems to be only available in Finnish and Swedish - therefore I can wish that more people would have access to this little book (it's so tiny it's almost a booklet) giving insight to one very little piece of human history.

In English the title of this book would be something like And I Wasn't A Prisoner. The author, Hella Wuolijoki, was a Finnish-Estonian writer, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment during the Continuation War for being a spy for the Soviet Union. During the imprisonment, she wrote a journal in which she made observations about her fellow inmates and life in prison, while commenting the war and the social situation in Finland.

Her good, friendly shadow walked upright before me, she gestured silently to me with a worker's hand: "Don't be afraid... there is no death... for those, who die for life..."     She was a Finnish working woman and she loved her country and her people, she gave her life for its liberty... carrying the name of a traitor. She walked into death singing. Her name was Martta Koskinen*.

Book Challenge: Day 23

Day 23 – A book you wanted to read for a long time but still haven’t

There are two books that have been collecting dust on my book shelves for ten years or so. I would really like to read them, but for some reason it has never happened.

The books are War and Peace by Tolstoy and Notes From The Underground by Dostoevsky.

Day 22 – Favourite book you own

Can I only pick 1? Ok. There is one book that I read when I'm feeling down. I also read it when I'm happy, or when I need to read some Russian. It's a book that travels with me everywhere I go. My hair usually looks nicer, though, when I read this book.

Book Challenge - Day 21

Day 21 – Favourite book from your childhood

I used to read a lot when I was a child. The majority of the books were American kids' fiction such as Sweet Valley High or Nancy Drew. I remember how I wanted to go to America after I'd read those books.
The favourite series, however, is one that I still enjoy reading once in a while. The series about Emily of New Moon by LM Montgomery  is enchanting in all its innocence.

Book Challenge: Day 20

Day 20 – Favourite romance book

I'm tired and my head is feeling so dizzy that I can't remember when I last published a post for this challenge. Was it this morning? Anyway. Favourite romance book. Now, do I dare confess to reading such err... nonsense? Well, yeah. Sure. Romance books can be quite entertaining, Anyhow, the most entertaining romance book does not belong to this genre at all. But. I like the way Stephanie Plum has such a hard time deciding between Morelli and Ranger. I would be just as indecisive in that situation.

Book Challenge: Day 19

Day 19 – Favourite book turned into a movie

It's not a movie and it's not just one book - but at the moment I'm greatly enjoying to watch The Game of Thrones. I read the first books in the series in Spanish - at a time when I hardly spoke any Spanish - so the story is almost as good as new for me!
And why do I like it? Well, the series is beautifully made, the actors are good and there is a lot of blood and bare skin. Hah! (Just joking about the latter part.)

Book Challenge: Day 16

Day 16 – Favourite female character

Little My is very small, but very determined, fiery and loyal to her friends. She has a sour sense of humour and is sometimes thought of as being rude although she merely speaks her mind. She is good friends with Moomin, Sniff, Snufkin, the Moomins and she is close with Snorkmaiden although she finds her a bit silly. She is the half sister of snufkin and sometimes sits in his pocket. She is eventually adopted by the Moomin Family and lives with them. When she comes across someone smaller than her she competes for size as she wishes to be the smallest. Her favourite colour is red and she always wears the same dress.  (source)
