Two pens and a notebook. One cup of strong coffee. I collect notebooks and journals, especially from my travels. This one is from Istanbul. (my boyfriend collects magnets). Life would be very boring without paper and pens. Last weekend we were in Slovakia and I spent a good two hours on searching for a suitable diary. At the end I had to buy two of them because I couldn't choose which one was nicer☺

How I Love Stockholm In The Morning
Fog, mist, drowsy cafés. The crispy air of autumn and lazy sunrays trying to make it through the clouds.
The sharp feeling of nothingness when memories of a time long gone hit through to the surface at the moment when the hand touches the wooden door.
Yesterday I finally held a sword in that very same hand. Not a real one, yet a sword. It made me feel graceful, powerful. One day I will be dancing with a sword in my hand.

In Your Face
Now that I know how this works, I'll never leave you alone. In the world of selfie-perfection - and perfection in general - it feels good to remind oneself about the imperfections that are sometimes hidden, sometimes not. The size of the imperfection is not what matters, what matters is how it makes you feel. Sunday, 21 June 2015

10 Things That Make Me Mad
For a while now I have been entertaining myself with writing exercises. One of said exercises is to write down 10 things that make me angry. Every day. It might be good for connecting with my inner self or whatever, but I hate being angry. It's such a waste of time. And honestly, just thinking about things that make me angry is bad for my temper. Finding ten things a day is hard, so here's a slightly shorter list from the last few days. Now that I've gotten myself into this state, I need to get rid of all negative emotions.
- Ignorance. Especially online. It makes me angry when people do not know what the Minister of Foreign Affairs does. Or that Lithuania is not the same thing as Poland. What's the point in paying a lot of tax money if people do not learn the simplest things?
- People who do not know how to use public transport. Correction: people who do not know how to behave on public transport.
- Idiot criminals who think that online skimming is OK.
- Myself. For drinking too much wine at times.
- Public transport again. That man who sat too close.
Lesson learned? Stay away from online shopping, internet forums (fora?) and public transport. Then life is all good.
What makes you mad?

Oma maa mansikka, muu maa mustikka*
Hi again!
Istanbul was fantastic, and now I'm home with a tan, sore feet and two more days to go of my summer holidays (+ the weekend). Just realized that we will be away for at least the three upcoming weekends, so I'm quite forced to do laundry. Woop!
Anyway, Istanbul. It was (in no specific order): huge, chaotic, colourful, friendly, loud, smelly, disorganized, hilly, historical, cozy, upsetting and quite amazing. I believe that I had to confront some of my prejudices as well, so it was a useful trip from that perspective. Our timing was perfect, on Sunday there were parliamentary elections in Turkey so I had the opportunity to ruminate upon the campaigns (without understanding any of it). Speaking of the language, I don't like the sound of Turkish at all when spoken. In music it is a beautiful language, and written Turkish looks like a lot of fun, but it just sounds very strange to me. And we walked over 90K during these days, I'm quite happy I only have one blister on my left foot.
These are just some random thoughts - there will be more, so stay tuned!
* In Finnish, "home sweet home" becomes "own country strawberry, other country blueberry". I personally prefer blueberries, so I do not really get this.

With June Come the Holidays, Cheers to That!
Outside my window the typical Swedish summer is showing its face (it's raining cats and dogs and elephants) and here I am, sitting with my cup of tea. My good ol' friend the Laptop has finally been switched on. Two weeks of freedom await me. I have plans for the first three days. Today I will be attending a seminar on comparative politics (Finnish and Swedish) - this is fairly exciting, as the political situation in Finland is very interesting at the moment. Tomorrow I will attempt to run a 10 K. Wish me luck! And on Wednesday my taichi group is planning on getting the best of all worlds with taichi AND wine (ehem, actually a picnic) in the park.
I know someone how told me that she'd spend half of her summer holiday cleaning. CLEANING! Now, I know that people are different and who am I to judge anyway? But... for me, time off work means more time to explore and learn new things. And possibly to catch up on missed sleep.

Howdy!
Howdy!
Long time, no see, my friends. How are you? I hope you're well, enjoying the sunshine wherever you are. Life here in Stockholm has been far from dull. Here's an update...
...I managed to burn my hand and thus decided to stop drinking tea. Apparently drinking tea is very, very dangerous. Fortunately it was my left hand and I have also forgotten my promise. So, there was no real harm done. In fact, a smoking hot cup of tea is waiting for me!
...Belgium was lovely - much less conservative than I expected. To me, Brussels equals the European Union, a haven for all bureaucrats. Glad to admit I was wrong.
...Dutch is a funny language. All language learners have come across false friends. Klant is a spectacular false friend. Look it up!
...speaking of languages, it's funny how one can hold a fairly decent level in a foreign language, but then struggle with other aspects. My fancy British university did not teach me how to write copy in English. Then again, I studied Politics and Russian, so maybe the initial plan did not include copywriting. Practice makes perfect, though, so no worries. I love writing in English, so I'm glad to be doing what I do.
...we are addicted to Elementary. Or rather, I've got a wee crush on Sherlock Holmes. And that British accent. Lovely.
...best of all - Friday is a public holiday, so there are not many days left of this week. All in all, May will be exciting and June will start with two weeks of holidays. Looking forward to that.
Now, how are you?

Saturday Wine & Cheese
Back in Slovakia we had a tradition of regularly gathering all our friends for wine and cheese. It's nice to keep good traditions alive so yesterday it was time for our very first Wine & Cheese party in Stockholm. The basic idea is that everyone brings some cheese and a bottle of wine.

[500 Days] Fiilistelyä
Hello friends!
I have now a long list of posts to write, but let's begin with a "feel good"-one.
1) Google knows how to confuse (and to entertain)
2) Oh my, Google shocked me so badly that I have nothing more to say.
Just kidding.
But let's skip the list.
Let's see.
Life is quite ordinary. I am starting to think that ordinary is good. The other day I noticed that I'm quite the Conservative and Unexcited. As always it was a book that gave me insight. I think monogamy is great. And so is order and following the rules. And paying the taxes. My inner rebel has been silenced. It will probably show its face when it's time to vote.
The great question: will I vote? This is a tough one indeed. I'll actually be in Finland before the elections, so I could vote without the hassle to go to the embassy (because let's face it, Finland is so much easier to go to than central Stockholm).. One should always vote. It's a duty, a responsibility and a right, all in one. But what if none of the candidates feels right?

If you can imagine it...
It was early morning, the clock had just struck seven. The sleep was still in my eyes, but a thought was vaguely - yet clearly - entering my mind. You're silly, I told myself.
The thought was there, a seed had been planted. The very same day two girls at the marketing department mentioned that I should contact their manager about an internal transfer.
The seed had been planted in someone else's mind too. It was all too clear, an opportunity I had to embrace.
There are times that opportunities approach us in such a manner that they cannot be considered anything but defining moments.

Christmas Is Over
Christmas is over - yay.
The last day off work - nay.
We don't celebrate Christmas so much in this household. This year it consisted of sleeping and food. And days off. I don't know how it is in the rest of the world, but here in Sweden we have had quite a few public holidays the in the past few weeks, which means paid holidays. Today is a paid day off and it feels like Sunday. Again.
It feels like the new year is starting now.
As we moved to a new part of town, we were given a voucher to one of the local gyms. We have been there twice and are both quite happy about it, so I definitely think we will continue going there. I'm quite pleased that there is a separate area for women and that the membership gives access to all the gyms in the same chain around the country. Not that I travel so much in Sweden but there is another gym close to where I work, so I could go there once in a while.
[Insert gym selfie here]
[have no gym selfie]
Point with this post? More gym and less time off work (except for my normal holidays, at least six weeks this year, whoop!) What a promising start of the new year!

[500 Days]] 2014
Natalie asked how life and work were going. It made me think back on the year and all the things I have actually experience. Once again, I can say wow! 95% of the time I think my life is uneventful, but when I start summarizing the year, the summary may include moving to a new country or crisscrossing across Europe.
So, in 2014:
So, in 2014:
- I moved to Sweden. This far I'm happy with the decision. There have been no great culture shocks of any kind and we have been very lucky with finding somewhere to live and finding jobs. Apart from this, my boyfriend's family has been really supportive, which has also helped us a lot.
- Started a new job. Also happy with the decision, it has been stressful at times, but I feel that I'm doing something much more important (to me) than IT. Besides, they give me A LOT OF BOOKS.
- Travels. The aim was to go to five new capitals: only one of the capitals I visited was new (Vilnius), but hey, I have been to more than five capitals :)
- I started tai chi. You know how yoga people can be completely obsessed with the benefits of yoga? I think tai chi is a bit similar, albeit in a less trendy way,
- Language-wise I have not done much new. Unfortunately. I did read a couple of books in Spanish - does that count?
When December came, I decided to be diligent with the blog. It started well, but ended not-so-well. I think this has been the most social month in a very long time. We have managed to squeeze in trips, dinners, and parties.
Here are some photos from the past month.
